Good Will Hunting (Miramax Collector’s Series) (1998)
Amazon.com essential video
Robin Williams won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck nabbed one for Best Original Screenplay, but the feel-good hit Good Will Hunting triumphs because of its gifted director, Gus Van Sant. The unconventional director (My Own Private Idaho, Drugstore Cowboy) saves a script marred by vanity and clunky character development by yanking soulful, touching performances out of his entire cast (amazingly, even one by Williams that’s relatively schtick-free). Van Sant pulls off the equivalent of what George Cukor accomplished for women’s melodrama in the ’30s and ’40s: He’s crafted an intelligent, unabashedly emotional male weepie about men trying to find inner-wisdom. Matt Damon stars as Will Hunting, a closet math genius who ignores his gift in favor of nightly boozing and fighting with South Boston buddies (co-writer Ben Affleck among them). While working as a university janitor, he solves an impossible calculus (more…)

Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (Kindle Edition)
Amazon.com Review
Pratchett (of Discworld fame) and Gaiman (of Sandman fame) may seem an unlikely combination, but the topic (Armageddon) of this fast-paced novel is old hat to both. Pratchett’s wackiness collaborates with Gaiman’s morbid humor; the result is a humanist delight to be savored and reread again and again. You see, there was a bit of a mixup when the Antichrist was born, due in part to the machinations of Crowley, who did not so much fall as saunter downwards, and in part to the mysterious ways as manifested in the form of a part-time rare book dealer, an angel named Aziraphale. Like top agents everywhere, they’ve long had more in common with each other than the sides they represent, or the conflict they are nominally engaged in. The only person who knows how it will all end is Agnes Nutter, a witch whose prophecies all come true, if one can only manage to decipher them. The minor characters along the way (Famine makes an appearance as (more…)

Good Morning Revival

Their multiple piercings, shaved heads, and abundant tattoos have them labeled a punk band, but on their fourth album, Good Charlotte–led by twin brothers Joel (lead vocals) and Benji (lead guitar) Madden–fall much more under the umbrella of 1970s arena rock and mainstream ballads. There is the occasional foray into the pop-punk mode of previous records, including the distorted-vocal rap “Keep Your Hands Off My Girl” and “Broken Hearts Parade,” which sounds like Green Day with horns. It’s easy to see the maturation in the Maddens’ songwriting on such tracks as “The River,” a surveillance of the inner workings of Los Angeles, the grass-is-greener pop song “Something Else,” and “Where Would We Be,” a break-up ballad about Joel Madden’s split with pop princess Hilary Duff. With a piano lead and strident chorus, Madden admits, “Now I must confess that I’m a sinking ship/And I’m anchored by the weight of my heart.” Browbeaten in theory, like sister songs “Misery,” (more…)

Freaks and Geeks - The Complete Series (1999)
Amazon.com
The comedy/drama Freaks and Geeks limped through its sole season on NBC in 1999 before being expelled by the network–but not before earning critical acclaim and a devoted fan base that fought valiantly to keep it on the air. Now all 18 episodes have been released in this long-awaited boxed set, which allows longtime fans and first-timers alike to enjoy one of television’s most poignant and funny programs about high school. Created by writer-comedian Paul Feig and executive produced by Judd Apatow (The Larry Sanders Show), Freaks and Geeks followed the Weir siblings–former math whiz Lindsay (Linda Cardellini of the Scooby-Doo feature films and ER) and her younger brother Sam (John Francis Daley)–as they navigated the perils and pleasures of a Michigan high school circa 1980. What separated Freaks and Geeks from most other scholastic series was its brutal honesty–Lindsay and Sam, as well as their friends and parents, were given very human personas that showe (more…)
